Charley-Ann Crockart has been a regular feature in our articles as a rider who has been in fine form on all her competition horses since the restart of the 2020 calendar, post-lockdown. From her incredible run of form at the 2020 Gauteng Championships in October to her success at Burlington Cup in November, we knew it was a matter of time before Charley finally cracked the big leagues again.

With the 2020 South African Championships at Shongweni Club in Durban in full swing as of yesterday, the show hasn’t been short on action already. But as day 2 began, inclement weather resulted in a delayed start and a revision to the classes as we looked forward to the first 1.50m qualifier. Still, this didn’t deter our best riders from showcasing their talents, including Charley. Along with the usual group of campaigners, 5 new combinations took on the 1.50s, including Charley-Ann Crockart and The Burgh’s Epomein.

Due to the storm overnight and the delayed start time, the competition was converted into an A2 competition. Charley, who is a notorious speed demon and is regularly heard being called the “Master of Faster” by her fellow riders clearly took fondly to the decision, as she left her mark on the 1.50m classes and signified her intent by claiming 2nd place in her first 1.50m event in nearly a decade. From a talent like Charley, who only seems to be getting better with experience, this step is a gauntlet thrown down and one that other top-level riders would be well-advised to take note of.

We are thrilled to see Charley back at the top-levels and wish her many successes in the 1.50m classes.
