With the 2020 Burlington Cup drawing to close this past Sunday, we take a look at all the championship winners from the 1.10m, 1.20m, and 1.30m Saturday classes. With fantastic sponsorships from Biotech, Country Life Properties, Burlington Stables and others, the riders were rewarded handsomely for the efforts over the weekend.
The 1.10m was the first hight category to take on the Brett Webber (FEI 2*) championship track. With over 60 entries in the preliminary classes, only the top 32 qualifiers would step forward on Saturday to take part in the Biotech 1.10m Championship. With lots of really great prizes, courtesy of Biotech, a large cash prize for the winning rider and hampers and money for the groom of the winning horse, the riders were ready to compete. 16 riders completed the first round clear to step into the jump-off and increase their chances of victory but only one would be victorious. After a devastatingly good run of form recently, Charley-Ann Crockart riding Altamiras Papillion claimed the win in 33.39 seconds. Second place was awarded to Jason Phillips on Tatum Hoffmann’s Callaho Fandango and 3rd went to Miranda Van Rensburg riding Executive Alliance’s Callaho Castino.

The 1.20m Championship class, once again sponsored by Biotech, saw the top 32 qualifiers compete for their chance at victory at the 2020 Burlington Cup. With the running order set and the highest qualifiers in prime position, 17 combinations would go through to the jump-off. The first 8 riders in the jump-off left the door wide open for the higher qualified riders to claim the top positions. Charley-Ann Crockart was on fine form on her young horses and she secured a 2nd place finish on Capital Hampton in a time of 31.93 seconds whilst Mandy Johnstone had to settle for 3rd place on Rachel Diamond’s Colorado Z. Victory in the 1.20m Biotech Championship was clinched by Barry Taylor and Nicky Whitfield’s Collado’s Christie in a speedy time of 30.97 seconds, after he put on an absolute masterclass in taking every available turn.

The final class on Saturday saw a strong field of 96 competitors take part in the Country Life Properties 1.30m Championship. With no qualification required, the riding order was drawn randomly. A technical track awaited with plenty of unique challenges, only 32 riders made their way forward into the jump-off. As the end of the class drew near, Jonathan Clarke stepped into the arena on Silhouette Park’s Morgan van’t Heike. After a fall off his first ride in the jump-off from a very tricky inside turn, Jonathan was determined to complete the turn successfully, a feat he managed to come home in a very quick time of 38.29 seconds to take the victory in the Burlington Cup 1.30m Championship. Tanya Chelin was the next rider to step in and challenge for the podium places as she and Capital Carlo completed the course in 40.51 seconds and secured 3rd, while the 2nd position was claimed by Zandi Alcock riding her thoroughbred gelding, Favour The Bold in a time of 39.30 seconds.
