Many riders at the top end of showjumping know that having a quality string of horses of various ages is paramount to ensuring consistent performances in the competition arena for years to come. Several local riders already breed their own future champions, including the likes of Nicola Sime-Riley and Charley-Ann Crockart, but Charley is now making another addition to her growing string and has made an investment in a filly from Holland: Ophelia.
Charley-Ann, who operates out of CC Equestrian in Kyalami, has been a regular feature in several news stories from her recent success in the 1.50m ranks to the sale of her 1.50m partner Epomein, and even the talented future prospects from her superstar stallion, Legend. While the showjumping industry is constantly changing and horses regularly move to new owners, the opportunity for long-term investment has presented itself to the CC Equestrian team with their new filly.
A striking bay, Ophelia is by Chilli Willi, the dark bay stallion competed by Nicola Phillipaerts in the Longines Global Champions League, out of a Mylord Cathargo mare. Ophelia shares the same dam line as Charley’s stallion Legend, who has excelled in the competition ring including the Young Horse Performance Series.
Ophelia has been bought by the CC Equestrian team to further strengthen Charley’s team but for the time being, will remain in Holland to grow and mature. In a few years time, she will be imported to South Africa to begin her competitive career. While Charley is unfortunately left without a 1.50m horse at the current stage, her vast string of competitive horses and youngsters is an exciting sign for things to come.
