The Capital Stud’s first attempt at an online auction was highly successful and lived up to all the hype and anticipation of those in the industry. With 44 horses available for purchase broken down into 3 sections, the final hammer dropped this weekend, bringing tears of happiness and shrieks of excitement from the new owners. The event wasn’t just a first for Capital but was a record-setting event for South African Warmblood breeding.
The talk of the town is, of course, the record-breaking sale of lot number 18, Capital Ayden who sold for the unbelievable price of R2 million, the highest sale price of any warmblood from a South African auction. The 4-year-old stallion by Arezzo VDL out of a Mylord Cathargo Z mare was highly sought after; 31 bids were laid down before the bidding closed, spurred on by the news of his half brother claiming top honours in the stallion licensing in Germany this past week. With blue blood running through his veins and his incredible technique and elasticity, Ayden’s potential is unlimited and with his new owner and top-level South African showjumper, Neriske Prinsloo in the saddle, we expect great things from this pairing in the future.
Lot number 30, Capital Cole, was the 2nd highest purchase price at R780, 000. After 40 bids were laid down, this incredible horse was purchased by another top showjumper, Bronwyn Meredith Dos Santos. By Capital Chicoletto Z out of a Capital Colnardo mare, the horse was rated highly before the auction as “a horse for the future” with the “potential to jump to the top of the sport.” The 3rd-best seller for Capital Stud was Henning’s namesake, Capital Pretorius, who was bought by Pieter Klaver from Limpopo. A brother to Marlene Sinclair’s Douglas M, Pretorius is by Douglas, from the VDL stud, out of a Cassini I mare and is said to have a “super stylish technique and a brave honest disposition”.

On the opposite end of the spectrum, one lucky bidder walked away with an incredible bargain in the form of Capital Ciara for only R80,000. The 5-year-old mare by Capital Conlanc out of a Capital Chicoletto Z mare was rated by Capital Stud for the future as “an outstanding competitor in the open grades” and was bought by Megan Mileham who rides out of Leopard Creek Equestrian Centre in Benoni. An up and coming young rider, Megan and Ciara have an exciting future ahead of them.
With a net sales total of R13.9 million and an average of over R315,000 per horse, the auction has been an incredible success for Capital Stud despite the inability to host the auction in-person this year. The successful auction closes out a spectacular year for the stud after its victory at the 2020 South African Championship with Mark White Nissan’s Capital Chantilly ridden by Nicole Horwood and the sad retirement of Capital Don Cumarco, who has been a treasure to the showjumping community for almost a decade.
