Carolyn van Schalkwyk is a well known personality in the showjumping community, having founded the popular Espoir Equestrian brand of clothing and tack. An artist and designer by trade, she has now turned her attention to her beloved artworks. With shows placed on hold during the initial stages of the COVID-linked lockdown, Carolyn started sharing her art with the world on Facebook. Since then, her brilliance and talent has shone bright with many commissioned portraits for both individuals and companies.
On June 10th, Carolyn announced her new collaboration with Capital Stud ahead of their upcoming auction. The collaboration would see her draw a portrait of every horse available for purchase, with the winning bidder of each horse taking home a spectacular piece of art of their newly-acquired horse. To create the portraits, Carolyn referenced still photos of the auction lots taken by the renowned equestrian photographer, Tracy Robertson. This provided Carolyn with all the details needed to draw an exact replica of the 44 horses available.
Carolyn is not only an artistic genius and the visionary behind Espoir Equestrian but also a competitive showjumper in the open grades, with her trusty partner, Swazi-Lizkhar Land of Lagos in the 1.40m classes. While Landy, as he is affectionately known, is enjoying a holiday, her other equine partner, Callaho For Amigo, remains active in the competition ring with Carolyn’s coach, Jason Phillips, in the saddle.
