The 2020 Young Horse Performance Series came to a close on the 17th of October at the Steyn City Equestrian Centre, where the finals were hosted at a well-supported and fantastically sponsored event to cap off the season. With a high standard set throughout the year, the overall winners for Potential Showjumper in each age category were announced, taking into consideration how each had performed throughout the course of the year. With the YHPS being a competition dedicated to the up and coming talents of the industry, the eligible horses did not disappoint.
The 4-Year-Old Potential Showjumper class saw some incredible young warmbloods and thoroughbreds shine through the year with the beautiful bay mare Qasida taking top honours for the season. Owned and competed by Ronnie Healy of RH Equestrian, Qasida is a quality warmblood mare by Quantico (WB) out of a Concerto II (Holst) mare, bred by Sam Davis. This young mare was purchased by Ronnie from Anthony Kay of Ebb & Flow stables and horse sales in Port Elizabeth, and is already proving her massive potential in the show ring.
In the next category, the 5-year-old competition was no less exciting with over 15 combinations eligible for the overall title. Among them was a strong showing from the Callaho Warmblood Stud, with 8 Callaho youngsters representing the Christiana-based Stud farm. The win however, went the way of the gorgeous, Ashlee Healy-owned, Hausberger’s Sir Crumble, a young imported stallion by Crumble (Holst) out of a Casall Ask (Holst) mare, ridden by Ronnie Healy. This striking young stallion has already captured the attention of many competitive riders and potential breeders.
The Callaho Warmblood Stud took top honours in the 6-Year-Old Potential Showjumper category with the recently imported stallion Callaho’s Cartier. This impressive youngster by Casall (Holst) out of a Corrado I (Holst) mare is a promising young talent, produced and competed under the guidance of Callaho’s professional rider, Rainer Korber of Korber Equestrian in Kyalami.
The final category is perhaps the most exciting, as many of those competing in the 7-year-old category have already impressed at up to 1.30m in graded competition. With entrants such as Capital Moonlight, Callaho Lucky Luke, and Callaho Constantino, the title would be well represented by any of the 7-year-olds but when the event drew to a close, the winner was the incredibly talented and on-form Capital Moonlight and Kelly O’Connor. This Capital Stud-owned gelding by Chin Win (Holst) out of a Chacco Blue (Holst) mare claimed victory in the 7YO Potential Showjumper category just weeks after his 1.30m Championship win at the Gauteng Showjumping Champs.
With a long history of previous Potential Showjumper titleholders going on to achieve big things in the sport, we look forward to seeing how these talented youngsters perform in the ring going forward. More so, we look forward to the 2021 Young Horse Performance Series, where there will no doubt be new talented young stock introduced after the upcoming Capital Stud Auction and next year’s double Callaho auction.
