2020’s much-delayed SA Outdoor Grand Prix at Kyalami Equestrian Park started with a bang on Wednesday this week, seeing the country’s top riders coming together for the last national title of the year. Alongside the return of Ian van Schalkwyk to the competition ring, the main arena saw the return of Liam Stevens to the 1.50m grades with Guillaume
Liam Stevens has been a long standing competitive rider at the 1.50m heights and has established a fantastic base of operations in Glenferness with his own yard, Disa Stables. With a string of talented horses including Back on Track Nathan and Guillaume, Liam has been proactively making his way back to the 1.50m heights after the retirement of his longtime partner, the talented mare Wanda, who he retired near the beginning of the year.
Guillaume, a 9-year-old gelding by Heartbreaker out of a Burggraf mare, has been a rising star through the heights. Co-owned by Elizabeth Ladeira and Liam Stevens, the deliberate and scopey gelding has been steadily climbing the ranks under the expert guidance of Liam. Guillaume debuted in the 1.50m speed class at the Outdoor GP, with just a single fence down and 1 time penalty to mark the occasion.
We wish Liam and Guillaume the very best of luck at the top grades of the sport.
