Many showjumping aficionados will remember the incredible showjumping talent, Hickstead, who sadly passed away in 2011 at the tender age of 15 in the middle of a competition. The Belgian stallion, by Hamlet out of an Ekstein mare, owned by Torrey Pines and Ashland Stables Inc. and partnered by Eric Lamaze, was a truly unbelievable talent and one of the best of his time. Now, Hickstead is being immortalised by being inducted into the Canadian Sports Hall of Fame.

Hickstead’s long list of accolades includes winning Gold and Silver medals at the 2008 Bejing Olympics Games, claiming victory in the coveted Spruce Meadows $1 million CN International twice, being awarded as ‘The Best Horse in the World’ at the 2010 World Equestrian Games, and winning the highly sought after Rolex Grand Prix at the CHIO Aachen: World Equestrian Festival. The stallion was widely revered for his incredible scope, quick step off the ground, enormous character, and fantastic pace when required.

The induction ceremony was originally intended to be held this year, however, due to the global pandemic, this event has been pushed back to 2021. Hickstead will receive the Order of Sport award, the highest sporting honour in Canada, adding one final accolade to his already glittering career.
