Local showjumping talent is on the rise, with an unprecedented number of riders now at the 1.50m levels of the sport and just as many talented horses coming up the grades. But every once in a while, talent is spotted lower down the grades that deserve a mention. This past weekend at the 2020 South African Showjumping Champs at the Shongweni Club outside of Hillcrest, one partnership shone brightly for us as a huge prospect for the future: Penbritte Takara, ridden by Oscar Ncube.
Penbritte Takara, owned by Belinda Martin of Penbritte Equestrian Centre in Eikenhof, is a beautiful dark bay mare by Tulano out of a Power (Pilot) mare. She recently started her competitive career with the aid of her talented rider, Oscar Ncube, who needs no introduction as a top-level rider, owner of LinRowe Stables in Kyalami and coach extraordinaire to all his pupils. With Takara’s showjumping debut, as listed on SASJ, in August 2020, Takara and Oscar have quickly shown their strong connection as they tackled the 1.10m classes in Shongweni.
With springs in her hooves, scope a-plenty, fluidity in her jump, and the amazing partnership with Oscar, at only 5 years old, we think this mare is definitely destined for the big grades and is sure to keep an eye on. She also highlights the up-and-coming talent from local breeders – not just the big studs, either, as she was home-bred at Penbritte and is a sign of things to come from a number of their newly-bred horses.
